Axle Swap

Hello! I have a duo of 01 F150's with bad rear axles. I am currently driving the same vehicle with 3.55's on it and am assuming that it has the same gear ratio. I was wondering if I could swap just the whole axle with a different gear ratio and change the speedo gear or if I am better in just replacing the gears in the rear end... any advice would be great!

If you have a 4x4, you need both front and rear.

What about swapping the 8.8 rear end to a 9.25? Is there any problems I might encounter. I was considering going to the bigger rear end anyways and upgrading my f150 to a heavy half ton.

You can put a 9.75 in with no trouble but might be a little tricky getting a 9.25 in there,,lol.

FYI, I just bought a complete assembly from a junkyard, including the gear ratio I wanted, brakes, and everything for $700, which allowed me to install it by myself in about an hour. I didnt have to mess with all the labor of changing out the gears. I inspected the gears and brakes, and they were all in great shape, including the pads... all it cost me for labor was new fluid.

Thats the problem I'm running into. I can find an axle in every other gear ratio for the rear end of the truck except for the 3.55 in the 8.8. But I can find it in the 9.75 (thanks for the correction!) so I was just wondering if it was just a simple swap to the 9.75 or not.

Quesntion

Kinda off topic but how do I know what gear ratio my truck is...i just got into a pretty bad front end collision and I am trying to rebuild my front end...but I need a front axel housing(the tube that the axle runs through) and I can not find one. I had one place come close but I needed the gear ratio. I know there are tags on the differential and transfer case but I do not know what they mean...any help

Get the code off the door. Both front and rear will be the same ratio, and you can look it up here.

Example, 19 is a 3.55 open diff.

jizto00,

You will have to get the driveshaft shortened.

8.8 to 9.75

Hi, on ebay I found a new 9.75 3.73 rear axle complete with rotors, pads, and calipers. It says its for 04-up. Now being that I have 17 inch wheels will this swap into my 99 8.8? I have rear disc but i really want the 9.75. Plus mine may be on its way out with 110,000 miles. Can anyone tell me if this will work?

Thanks

the 04 and up are a 6 lug bolt pattern if I am correct and the 97-03 is a 5 lug bolt pattern, just an FYI

Also shock mounts are outboard of frame and springs on the 04 up.
