Those with rear end humming.........
How many miles have you had it?
If you HAVE NOT had it fixed how many miles have you put on since noticing it? Any side effects?
I've got it on my 03 Screw w/ 48,000 bought it used so don't know exactly how long it's been there
I'd like to hold off on re-building the rear as it's my 3rd vehicle so just wondering how long it MAY last lol.

My 8.8 was just recently rebuilt. The pinion bearing races and carrier bearing races were so badly gouged its amazing mine did not grenade! It sounded like I was running big 'ole mudder tires on it!
Get it rebuilt ASAP or ride on borrowed time;your decision!

Bringing this thread back up.
I have not noticed this problem in my '02 Screw.
Maybe it's always been there(bought used w/29k).Now has 55k.
I'll take a close listen today.
Is this a problem that will defintly arise?
I do alot of off-road.On the beaches-surfcasting up and down the East coast.
Thanks.

I'm in the process of having my truck's rear end replaced for the second time in 16 months (and less than 12k miles). It was sounding like I had Super Swampers on the rear end. The Ford dealership can't tell me why, but likes me paying around $1500 each time. Great for them, not so great for my bank account.
I would have thought rear ends would have lasted for 100k miles?

What year and model of truck ya got?
For that price couldn't you get a fully built rear end
Sorry to hear that.....did they have an explanation for you?
01 Scab XLT ...
I should say that's the whole rear end being replaced ... ring and pinion that is. Unusual wear ... grooves in parts is what I was told. I've got the parts so I'll aim to take some pics and post them.

I have the noise too. Bought it used and it had all terrain tires so I thought it was them. Switched to performance truck tires and noise is still there. I've got 182000km(around 110000miles). Changed axle bearings but still there. Backlash is at .015(.008-.012 normal), carrier bearings look new but the gears have wear marks on them. The gear is 3.55 and an open diff. These gears,Ford Racing, are only at dealer for $531us. Summit has 3.73 for $178. When I go with the 3.73 does anyone know if I just change the speedo gear or does the computer need reflashing. It's a 1998 f150 XLT with 5.4.

I traded my 97 scab in on a 01 screw a couple of months ago. The 97 had 195,000 mi on it. I would say 75,000 mi ago I thought I was going to have to rebuild the tranny cause it sounded awfull but every time I took it in for an oil change I had the guys check out all the bearings and stuff and it always checked out. It was a 2wd. It was still making that same racket when I traded it in.

Or did you mean to say rear diff
Sorry not sure if you were just adding some helpful info.
How do they check the bearings during an oil change

Yes I caught that later myself, rearend is what was ment. They check the bearings because I asked them to. I don't think they do it unless the customer says there may be a problem with the bearings. Hope that clears it up. Just trying to help.

Appreciate the input
For me, the only cure for the rear axle whine on my '01 Screw with 3.55LS was replacement of the entire rear axle assembly - housing, gears, bearings, everything. My local dealer (who I must give props to for being very cooperative through the whole process) rebuilt the diff twice under warranty, with little success at stopping the whine. Finally, after consulting with the regional reps and FoMoCo engineering, they replaced the entire assembly, (at 35,800 miles), and there has been no whine since (currently at 119,000 miles). I think the conclusion was that some axle housings had/have slight casting flaws such that the gears can never be set up exactly right, and thus the seemingly unfixable whine.

If that's the case maybe i should just keep driving it until i can no longer stand it :o if i'm going to have to replace the entire assembly
How quickly after the initial 2 re-builds did the whine come back?
I'd hate to waste the time and money to re-build it and then have to replace the entire assembly shortly after.........and i definitely don't wana keep re-building every 10,000 miles

p.s. I know it was all covered for ya but do you know what the entire assembly would cost for me (approx)?
Thanks

Each rebuild reduced the whine a little, but did not eliminate it. I noticed as I drove away from the dealer each time that it was maybe a little quieter, but was still there.
I have no idea what it would have cost if the entire assembly had been out of my pocket...$1000-$1500, but that's a very wild guess.

Has anybodys whine sound turned into a squeeking or chirping sound? Almost overnight i noticed this squeeking almost like a brake clip dragging. Brakes are fine, so far i have re packed the front wheel bearings, replaced the u-joints, checked all of the brakes. The only thing that may have made this sound change is when i replaced the u-joints. I think it got louder after that. The sound does not change when the brakes are pressed, but it seems to change with the speed of the truck. I just wondered yesterday about the whining sound, it seemed like it got worse and then it went away a little, and now i have this awful squeeling going on.
03 supercrew, 5.4L, 78,000 miles. The truck was in an accident around 18000 miles and they had to do a frame swap on it, i should have gotten rid of it then because since i've had to replace idler arm, pitman arm, the right wheel bearings blew out and had to replace the whole front spindle and rotor, multiple loose bolts. But this sound has me stumped.
