Unhappy Tranfer case leaking.

I have a 1998 Ford F-150 4x4. 4.6 Liter trition. It's not engaging into 4WD. It seem like it is locked up solid. I checked all the fuses, all were fine. But i noticed my transfer case is leaking. I know nothing about the transfer casing, could it be a seal, plug, what would cause it to leak?? Will i need to replace the whole transfer case? Or maybe have it resealed?? I'm so lost on this one.

Thanks,

Steph

wipe the whole thing down, scrub it good.drive around then park over a big piece of cardboard ,that will help pinpoint the leak.i thought i had a leak and it was the extensing housing seal. as the driveshaft was spinning around it was blowing fluid everywhere making me think it was the case itself. 20$ seal all it was.so clean it good before assuming a major problem.

Would this cause the 4x4 not to engage though?? It won't budge at all.. The transmission is Automatic, and the 4x4 is on the Floor.

The light only comes on when i start up the truck, then turns off as normally. And before it was always hard to shift into 4WD, but now it's not at all. I did do the neutrel and foot on brake, still nothing.

It's not making any grinding sound, just leaking as far as i can see, The truck has 100,344 miles. ( As for running it on a dirt road, i can't get the thing to shift at all into 4WD or 2 Low.)

so right now all you have is regular 2wd or 2h right?? the level is probably to low, just like a auto tranny a low level it wont shift.find a good mechanic to help you.dont force or jerk the handle etc..from what u tell me fluid level is probably to low.are you sure its leaking from transfer case?? first thing is find out what exactly is leaking.

I won't try to put it into 4WD again, Tommorrow morning i will bring it down the street to Ford, so they can take a look at for me, and tell me exactly what is the cause of it leaking. It does drive and shift fine from the transmission, so more than likly it is the fluid, Thank you once again for all your help Keith, let you know what happens tommorrow with it. Have a Happy New Year.

Steph
