Question Setting pinion depth

My rear end was rebuilt a few weeks ago. They used Ford Motorsport gears. It is now making a "whirring" noise when coasting.According to the instruction sheet it says you must add shims to the pinion to get the correct depth to the center of the ring gear in order for it to be set up rite.As I was watching them rebuild it I noticed they did not do this step. Will this cause the problem i'm having now?

That link contains at least 15 steps. Which one do you think they skipped?

In any case: yes, ANY error can cause noise, accelerated wear, & even a catastrophic lockup at speed.
