Rear Diff Transfer Case Fluid Change
Rear Diff Transfer Case Fluid Change
What are the recommended fluid change intervals for the rear diff and transfer case? I have a 2000 F150, 4X4, Ext Cab Lariat, 5.4L.
Thanks in advance for your help.

On the left is "maintenance schedules" and will answer all your questions... According to Ford, if it is in the "severe" use category, which, in most cases is true (towing, off-roading, idling, etc) the change interval for both the rear diff, and the t-case is at 60K miles.

30,000 miles on the rear end and transfer case?!!??!
Page 34 of the '00 scheduled maintenance guide states,
Seems pretty clear-cut to me.
Severe operating conditions call for changing the transfer case fluid every 60,000 miles. (Page 35) Those conditions include towing a trailer or using a car-top carrier, extensive idling and/or low speed driving for long distances as in heavy commercial use such as delivery, taxi, patrol car, or livery, operating in dusty conditions, or off-road operation.
That's Ford's official recommendations. IMHO, every 100K for both the transfer case and the rear diff is fine, unless you've dunked it in the water. Do whatever lets you sleep well at night, but IMHO, doing them every 30k is excessive and a waste of money.

Page 34 of the '00 scheduled maintenance guide states,
Rear axles containing synthetic lubricant and light-duty trucks equipped with Ford-designed axles are lubricated for life. These lubricants are not to be checked or changed unless a leak is suspected, service is required, or the axle assembly has been submerged in water. Non-synthetic axle lubricants should be replaced every 3000 miles or 3 months, whichever occurs first, during extended trailer tow operation above 21 celsius 970 degrees farenheit) ambient and wide open throttle for extended periods above 45 mph. The 3000 mile lube change interval may be waived if the axle was filled with 75W140 synthetic lubricant meeting the Ford spec ..... {snip}...... The rear axle lubricant should be changed anytime the axle has been submerged in water.
