Question Help w/ some stupid questions

What makes a 1/4 ton PU a 1/4 tom PU?? I've always assumed that that was the weight limit on the hitch. Am I far from wrong??

Also, Are all F-150 1/4 ton or are they all 1/2 ton. Or are some 1/4 ton and some 1/2 ton.

Also, where is all this written??

The f150 is a 1/2, its the load capacity of the bed. There is no 1/4 unless you are talking Japaneese....lol....f250 3/4 ton , and f350 1 ton....alot of it is the suspension, motor and transmission and rear ean all all changed depending on what you get. Dave

Dave's exactly right - its the bed capacity. Most trucks don't correspond too neatly with the ratings - I think most new F150's are rated at around 1,250 pounds in the bed, but are considerd 1/2 ton. If it is a 1 ton truck, that means 1 ton in the bed. Ever driven a Japanese mini truck rated at 1 ton? The springs don't move much when the truck is empty, that's for sure!

Um, Dave..... Ranger, S10, etc.
I personally don't care for 1/4 ton pick-ups. They're too small to go on trips with and haul a load. They're cars with oversized trunks, IMHO. If you don't agree with me, let me know in private please - smalltruckssuck@fordf150.net ;-)

It get even more confusing when you look at two trucks sitting side-by-side, and the door pillar shows 7700# GVWR for one, and 5800# GVWR for the other.

On mine, for example, it weighs 5550# empty -- yet is rated to carry an additional 2,150# (7700-5550).

In my book, that's over One Ton.

Thanks Guys, I guess I made up that hitch weight theory all by myself.

My owners manual sez that cargo Capacity is the GVWR minus the Curb Weight. Well I've done a search on the net for curb weights on '99 F-150 SC. and based on what I've found, If I take those values and subtract them from my GVWR (6,300#) I get anywhere fron 1,351 to 2,377# payload capacity.

Do they market 3/4 and 1 ton F-150's ??

I think about 300 to 450 lb of that is considered to be in the cab as people load. That would bring the bed capacity down to roughly 1000lb. Naturally it's going to be a soft number since the people weight is a soft number.

Right now, the 7700 model is the highest rating for the F-150 -- and is the first time that an F150 is approved for a snow plow.

BTW, they dropped the F-250 LD in favor of the F-150 7700 -- which is supposed to have a slightly stronger frame than the 'normal' F-150.

It is the same truck as the F-250LD was in 99, just with different badges, and a different name.

The GVWR is the total weight of the truck inluding fuel, oil, passengers, added accessories, and cargo. If want to know how much cargo you can carry it will be the difference between GVWR - minus passengers, etc. The difference will be the cargo capacity. So if you have 5 passenger that weigh 200lbs ea that equals 1000lbs plus 25 gals of fuel = 8.8lbs/gal=220lbs plus any added accessories have to subtracted from the GVWR to get the actual rated cargo load. So a half ton may be rated only for 800lbs or maybe 1200lbs. GVWR is max weight. Load capacity is GVWR minus empty weight plus passengers, fuel etc.

Well if our pickups are 1/2 ton, then Ford is really under-rating them. According to the 99 F-Series Brochure my pickup truck has a max bed capacity of 1825 pounds. That's a lot closer to a ton than to half a ton. The exact specs on my truck are in my sig. Now the brochure does have a foot note for this field saying that bed capacity is that number minus other cargo, people, and optional accessories. But even with several passengers, bed capacity is probably closer to 3/4 ton (1,500 lbs).
