There are 2 ways to know for sure: look at the gears, or measure the revs.

There are 2 ways to look at the gears: pull the filler plug from the front of the diff housing & slowly turn the d'shaft (at least 1 wheel has to be off the ground) until you can read the number stamped into the edge of the ring gear, or pull the back cover off (dumping all the oil). Click my signature link & look in the 8.8" Axle album for more info.

There are 2 ways to measure the revs:
1) If you have an open diff, chock at least 1 front wheel front&back, shift to N, lift one rear wheel, put a chalk mark from the brake backing plate to the rim & another from the d'shaft flange to the diff housing, and rotate the d'shaft until the tire makes exactly 2 full revs. The exact number of d'shaft revs is the ratio.
2) If you have a limited slip diff, chock at least 1 front wheel front&back, shift to N, lift BOTH rear wheels, put a chalk mark from the brake backing plate to the rim on either side & another from the d'shaft flange to the diff housing, and rotate the d'shaft until the tires make exactly 1 full rev. The exact number of d'shaft revs is the ratio. It's critical that both rear wheels turn exactly together for this to work.

BTW
What's the AXLE code from your door sticker? If the first digit is an H, you originally had a limited slip. If the 2nd is an 8, your original ratio was 3.08. You can also look at the tag on the diff cover, if it's still there. There's a diagram in that photo album that shows how to read Ford axle tags.
