How can I tell gear ratio?

I bought a "new to me" 2004 F150 Lariat Scab 4x2. Naturally, the original owner was a little light on the paperwork with the truck so I have been trying to find out just what is in this puppy. Anybody know how to get the options info on a truck to find out what was original? I would like to know what gear ratio he put in it, he tells me he ordered an upgrade but doesn't remember.

TIA, you guys are a fount of knowledge. Can't wait to start the upgrades and mods.

About the only way I know of, if the gears have been changed, would be to pull the cover and count the teeth on the ring and pinion.Divide the number on the ring gear by the number on the pinion.Ex.If the ring gear had 41 teeth and the pinion had 10, then your gear ratio is 4:10.

If he means he ordered it from the factor, the code is on the drivers door on the tag. Some one will chime in with what the codes mean, or you can do a search. It has been posted in several threads.

Sorry kinda misunderstood that. If it's factory then the gear ratio is on a tag on the rearend cover. The top right corner of the tag close to the bolt should say. Could have 3L55 or 3L73.Theres a few different ones it could be, you'll just have to look.If it had 3L73 then you have 3.73 gears.

You could jack it up, mark the driveshaft, count the turns to make one revolution of the wheels. That's close to enough to tell you which ratio it is.

Yep, I started to say that but decided it was too complicated.

Yep, one heck of a lot easier to read the door code.
