It really did not want to go into nuetral and stay.
What could I be doing wrong? Now I know the smart***es will have plenty to say about my ignorance, but I hope that someone could help me out here.
From what im gathering, that sounds right. Are you saying that you have the 4x4 transfer case in neutral and you cant go anywhere? If thats the case, its what it is supposed to do. If you want to drive, you MUST be in either... 2H, 4H or 4L. If the transfer case for the four wheel drive is in Neutral, you wont go anywhere because it's well... neutral, even if you're in first gear in a manual transmission, or in Drive in an automatic transmission.
Does that help?

Well actually that confuses me even more! When I got the truck the transfer case was in neutral, and it drove just fine. That can't be good

So, I should leave the transfer case in 2H. Thanks for the schooling. Now, what could explain the fact that the transfer case was in nuetral and everything was working before?

Now thats just weird if it was driving with the transfer case in Neutral! Im thinking it may have just looked like it was in Neutral. If you dont need four wheel drive, keep it in 2hi, you'll get a lot better gas mileage. Heres some more tips for ya...
Dont use 4x4 on dry pavement, even wet pavement can be bad.
Every once in awhile I'll use 4H and 4L in the backyard just so nothing stops working due to lack of use.
Do you have the manual shift 4x4 like me, or the **** on the dash? If you have the shifter on the floor, its a good idea to spray some lubricant on the linkages so everything shifts real smooth.

I'll think of some more.

Thank's for that info. I know it was running in 2wd at first because as soon as I shifted into 4H and 4L the 4x4 light on the dash came on. I do have the manual shifter on the floor, so I will get that lithium lubricant for the linkage.

I suspected that the 4x4 should not be used on the hardpan. I was really just playing with it on the beach sand.

Thank's again for all your help!

I'm quite sure that's not the case..... I assure you that, if it was in neutral, it would not have driven. It was in two wheel drive, I'm sure.

Yes, the truck should be in 2 wheel drive when driving. Please read your owner's manual. If you do not have one (check the pocket behind the right side of the glove compartment... flip the door down and it may be stashed there) visit Motorcraft.com and download your own free copy.

Good luck!

I guess you could call them vacuum solenoids. They're next to the battery on the firewall. The size of a 35mm film canister and black with a vacuum hose going to each one.

Oh sorry. It might be a dealer only item but who knows? I do believe it would be called a vacuum solenoid though.
