9" axle

General question by a stoopid English man
What is meant by 9" and whatever other size axles????

The ring gear is 9" in size I believe, that's the only thing I can think of.

yes it's the size of the ring gear. A ford 9" has a 9" ring gear, a ford 8.8, 8.8" for example.

Some manufacturers refer to the number of diff cover bolts. i.e. GM 10 bolt, 12 bolt and 14 bolt. However not all of the axles maybe the same just because they are both the same bolts number. For example the 14 bolt, it came with 3 or 4 different ring gear sizes depending on what you pulled it out of.
