Open Differential

I have a 2002 F150 4x4 with 3.55 gear and open diferential. I like the 3.55 gear, but I would like to install a locker or limited slip....what do I need to do? Also, the front when in 4wheel drive both tires do turn at the same speed don't they? Thanks.

Depending on what kind of driving you do will depend on what kind of locker or limited slip you'll want. If you do a lot of city driving I would opt for the Detroit tru-trac because it's no where near as hard on tires as a locker. I just put 4.10's with the detroit tru-trac in my truck and love it. When your in 4WD your front tires turn the same as the rear, if they didn't then you'd have problems, especially on roads. Hope this helps.

You do not have to put a limited slip or a locker in the front AND rear, you can just put one in the rear or in the front, all depends on what you want. I had a mechanic that I'm comfortable with change mine, it's pretty involved and you need some tools that the everyday DIY person has. With gears and detroit tru-tracs, fluid, aluminum cover and everything installed it's gonna be $2200. Hope this helps.
