If I'm wrong, someone please correct me.

The 8.8 refers to the diameter of the ring gear in the differential (8.8 inches across). Ford used and still uses this rear end in quite a few different models so I would think it's a pretty good diff. Granted, from everything I've read and heard it doesn't compare to the old 9", but it's still pretty good.

Since you're asking about the differential, I'm guessing you're considering changing gears. Since you have the 4.2 you most likely have 3.08's. That's what my '98 with the 4.2 had anyway, but mine was an automatic. You could change them to probably 3.55's and gain some low end.

Try this site: www.v6f150.com
There's quite a bit of info there that's specific to the 4.2L.

I would advise not getting involved with that site.It is run by snot nosed brats that have no clue about the mechanical workings of the Ford truck.
