2003 supercrew 4x4 problem

When I am out in my truck and I am craling hills and rocks the 4 wheel drive seems to work fine and it seems to get the job done. Today I got into a stcky situation in the mudd and I had to put it in 4 low and nothing happened. THe front wheels wont spin but I can feel it ingage. I jsut replaced the vacum so I thought that would make it work but now it seems to be doing it again has this happened to anyone and is there any advice out there that can help me? also when I am on the pavement I can feel the 4 wheel drive but it seems that when I get stuck it wont work it is weird. ADVICE PLEASE!!!

If you already know this please ignore, when shifting in-to or out-of 4 low you must put the transmission in neutral first then shift into 4 low you will here the transfer-case clunk then put it in gear.

ya I shift it into neutral everytime and it still seems to only put power to the back wheels. The front wheels wont spin in the mud. I can feel it in 4 low though I can feel the low end torgque. Do you have any other ideas?

When you mentioned you can feel it on pavement are you meaning that you can feel the torque bind in the system as you engage it on pavement and then try to turn the wheel while moving forward? Or are you refering to the fact that it feels like the engine's working harder...just wondering as the transfer case and the center axle disconnect are two seperate operating systems on this vehicle....what I mean is that the transfer case can engage the front drive shaft but the front wheels may not turn....just my two cents worth - take it or leave it....I hope it helps
