The 8.8 is dead

Got home from my weekly 140 mile trip to my corprate office, was walking around the truck and I caught the scent of gear oil. Looked under the diff, nice and dry. Then I looked over at the right side tire, covered in gear oil and about an 8" puddle already under the tire. Then I noticed a drip, looked up and the entire wheelwell, frame, exhaust, everything is covered in oil and dripping all over my driveway I backed it up into the grass and just got finished sweeping up the oil dry. Looks like its the tow truck for the old ford. At least it didn't lock up on the interstate, that would have sucked!

130,000 mostly highway miles on a 2002 F150.

Looks like the bearing went out and took out the seal, I could hear the bearing humming on the way home. Anyone else have this happen to their 8.8?
Wonder how much the stealership is going to bend me over for this?

To top it off the dealer FINALLY called and said my 2006 S-crew is in after 9 weeks of waiting. Too bad the dealer is down the road from my office which is 140 miles away.

4wDakota,
The rear outer bearing and seal is an easy fix. Do a search here or get a shop manual to help. Here’s a brief...
Pull the cover off the rear, pull the retainer for the axel and pull the axel out from the tube. R&R the bearing. Replace the seal and then reverse the steps to reinstall. Shouldn't cost more then $40 to do yourself with gear lube.
The bearing may be pressed on so you may have to take it to a shop for that.
Good luck.

Well they fixed it

The damage:

Passenger side bearing destroyed, took out the seal and the axle shaft

The mechanic checked the drivers side and it was going bad too.

Got the seals, bearings, and axle shaft replacedfor $1,000. Aparently its sort of common according to the dealer

Got it back to my office and picked up my new truck
