97 F150 4X4 rear diff needs rebuild

Ok, I have 135000 miles on my F150 (supercab, shortbed, 4X4) that I bought this last summer. I was getting a bunch of noise from the rearend, and the tranny shop said the u-joints were bad. I had them install new u-joints and now I have a high pitch squeal as I drive (changes pitch with speed changes). I took it back to the same shop and they opened up the rear diff to discover a bunch of metal shavings in the fluid. Shop said shavings have worked through the seal on the passenger side and it is getting fluid on the brakes. So, to make a long story even longer, they said IF the axles are good still, it will cost me $1,200 -$1,400 for the rebuild and brakes. If the axles are bad, then I am looking at 3-400 more.

So, is this a reasonable price? Do I have other viable options?

Sounds expensive. Although, you are paying for labor too.

I would be checking the junkyards for a complete rear axle. If you can find one for the right price, you may have enough left over for a locker!!!

Appairantly, the diff needs rebuilt, new hubs, and it will need new brake shoes. Shop said it was a bearing that was causing the problems and the hubs are what is now making the noise I hear.

This is uncharted waters for me. Most minor to moderate repairs I can do if the manual is clear and I have the correct tools. Rebuilding things are beyond me.
