97 F150 Differential change /upgrade

I have a 97 f150 4x4 with 200,000 miles and the rear end (8.8 3.55 gear) has been whining under a load for about the last 20,000 miles. I'm told it could be the ring and pinion, wheel bearing or a combination and depending on the severity could cost up to $1800.00 for repairs. I have found that complete used ones generally run from $400 to $700 with warranties from 30 days to 6 months. I'm leaning that way. My question is, there are disc brakes on some. What is required to upgrade to disc brakes say from a 2003 model. If that is more trouble than it's worth my other question is, will my drum brakes replace the disc set up on the later differential as a bolt on and no modification. I appreciate any help and I thank everyone in advance.

Thanks,
Dan Benson

1800 is out of control you can get a TRU TRAC diff installed and new ring and pinion for probably half that labor and materials
