Precision Gears

Where is a good place to buy precision gears. Also still trying to figure out what size I want. Tire size is only going to be a 33 but can't decide on 4 56,s or bigger or if bigger would be too ridiculous.

What are the specifics on your truck? I just dropped 4:10 in my 97 and am running 33's I thought about 4:56 but was talked out of them by the installer (glad he did) I run about 2500 RPM at 70 MPH now and the truck has plenty of zip I think the 4:56 are extreme for everyday use and occasional towing or light offroading

I recommend 4.56s and with 33s, you should still be under 2300rpms at 70mph in OD.

Good luck finding those gears. Everywhere I've tried said the Precision 4.56s are on several months backorder. I wasn't stoked either...

I'm also looking at going with 4.56 gears. Right now with stock 265/70/17's and 3.55's I'm at about 1950 rpm at 70 mph in overdrive. I'm at 1600 rpm at 60 mph and 1750 at 65 mph.

If I'm at 1950 at 70 now, what will I be at with same tire size but 4.56 gears?

Well, I found the answer to my question here: http://www.ringpinion.com/content/calculators/RPM.asp

Looks like going from 3.55's to 4.56's will raise my OD RPM at 75 mph from about 2000 rpm to 2500 rpm. And at 80 mph it goes from 2100 to 2700! I drive at 80 when on 70mph hwys, so not sure if I'm going to want to cruise around at 2700 rpm.

On the other hand, this would only be until I go to a bigger tire size. My plan is for 305/70/17's, so that would put me at 2540 at 80 mph and 2380 at 75.

hmmmm....what to do, what to do......

What to do for sure... I have an '02 SCrew that I've got 315/70/16's on and I was going through the same back-and-forth that you are. Yeah, I've got the 35's on now, but I may want 38's in a year or so and I don't want to have to do gears twice, y'know. I finally decided on 4.88's and that should set me back to just a little higher than stock and also still be good if I put on 38's.

My main problem now is that I really need the gear swap, but here in New Orleans businesses are still so screwed up since Katrina that I have no idea who to trust to do the installation. Even the 4x4 shop I usually go to says their trusted tranny shops are either closed or swamped with work because they're the only ones open.

Is there anyone reading this in south Louisiana that knows a trustworthy shop or how to find one you can trust? TIA!

Drive your truck on the highway with the OD off and cruise at the RPM level that the 4:56 will put you at, I know personnaly 4:10's are a perfect fit for me as I will be driving around with the factory wheels in the winter
