Shudder on takeoff

I have a 2000 XLT that has started to shudder on takeoff, especially when making a turn, or starting from uphill. I can tell it originates from the rear end...anyone know what might cause this? And what I'll have to do to fix it?

First thing to try is replace the rear diff fluid with the new 75w140 recommended by Ford. Make sure you add the friction modifer. If that doesn't work, you may need new clutches on your year diff.

sounds like a problem i had,, the rear drum in the tranny was going out

take it in now before it gets worse, and costs more to fix.

Most likely you'll need to replace the clutch pack in the rear diff. I do these a lot. Have tried just adding friction modifier or changing fluid and it doesn't seem to help. Try adding the bottle of friction modifier first and then if that doesn't help, just replace the clutch pack. Good luck.

I suggested the diff oil change, simply because that worked for my 04. As the recommended is now 75w140 instead of 75w90, the lower weight may be part of the problem. Also not knowing how many miles are on the current fluid, it could be a cheap fix with just a fluid change.
