$40 per quart for 75W140 gear oil??

Firestone just re-sealed a leaky differential housing for me, and $160 of the charge was for 4 quarts of 75W140 synthetic gear oil (brand unspecified).

I haven't been able to find gear oil with those specs for more than about $10 per quart ANYWHERE, and even my local Ford dealership quoted me $67 for a differential fluid change, parts AND labor.

Is it safe to assume I'm getting ripped off, or do I owe the service advisor at Firestone an apology for telling them they're gouging?

Still a far cry from $39.99, though.

Yes, that was a rip-off on price per quart AND quantity used.

They've credited my card back almost $120. I'm happy with the resolution but not happy it happened in the first place.

25 years later and I see they're still at it.

I hope you, and others that read this, will do like I did. No more bidness from me.

I know, I know. The thing is that I'm generally pretty happy with their tires and tire work, so I go there for the regular balance and rotation. I also purchased a lifetime front end alignment from them, and they usually do a good job with that. I discovered the leak just before I took it in for some routine stuff.

From now on, though, I'll shop around for the repairs that aren't either paid for already or related to my tires.

If you have a limited slip, I hope they put in a friction modifier.

I just bought 3 quarts of Royal purple 75 140 synthetic performance lube with a fel pro gasket for $46 total expense. The royal purple was only $9.80 a quart and it is a really top of the line lube. So you got ripped off hard Im glad you got money back.

I agree that Royal Purple is the very best & it is usually the most affordable even when factoring shipping costs (I can't buy any locally).
R.P. also adds a friction modifier in every quart!

Blonde tax

Sometimes they call the extra charge a "blonde tax" or a "girl charge".
They assume that you don't know what a good price is because you're a lady.
I'll be sure to tell my sister about Firestone's overcharging.
I won't even buy tires there anymore.

Ford once said every part on a vehicle can be made to last forever. Then he said that you could never make money that way...So that's why we have Motorcraft parts, ****ty parts, and expensive manufacturers spec qualfications in which I will never follow again. Got it out of my *** with that freaking oil. Next time(ifthe truck alsts that long I'm just Royal Purple or Lucasing it...
