I'm going to do the same. I got a price of around a grand to swap out my 3.55 LS for the Eaton 4.10 LS. This is only for my rear as I have a 4X2.

any of the programers will be able to fix your speedo reading, a good place to start looking for gears would be www.4wheelparts.com or www.summitracing.com to name a few there are lots also try randys ring and pinion great customer service, good luck

That's a good question, my speedometer is off since I went up in tire size, so I am actually going faster then it really shows or reads which in turn shows that I am going less miles then I really am. From what I have read on this site Ford can only recalibrate the speedo for factory tires and will probably give you some slack for changing the gear ratio as well. I myself plan on getting the XCAL2 from Troyer performace. This will correct the speedo and I was told you can update your gear ratio changes you make. I asked a very similar question under the Chips&programming threads titled "Mod Question" I got some really good responses including one from MikeT. Maybe someone else will chime in on other ways to adjust your speedo but I do know that the XCAL2 will do that for you, along with giving a nice boost in performance. Since I lost power when going up in tire size I was first going to re gear to get the power or torque back but then found out I can get the XCAL2 to get the power and make the gear ratio changes myself when I do change them.

I am not a mechanic (electrician) I am however mechanically inclined and my two buds who are mechanics said they will help me with the gear swap, is this a difficult job? special tools? I worry about reliability that is all, I don't think twice about planning a trip to North Dakota and jumping in my truck and going I want that same feeling once the gears are done.

Ok guys went down to the local speed shop and kicked around the idea of a gear swap and BOY did I get the RUNAROUND! The guy told me $6-1000 for just the rear and was telling me I would need new carrier bearings yada yada, then he said he couldn't do the front and that he would have to sub it out to someone who could yada yada telling me I was going to spend $3-3500 by the time I was done, WTF! I will spend $1000.00 parts and labor to have it done maybe $ 1500.00 but no way am I spending $ 3-3500 **** I will just sell the truck and buy a new one with 4:10 already in it! I love my truck and don't want to part with her she's like a part of the family and I was getting a little bored with it but I won't be foolish with my money either. Whats the scoop on the gear swap for these trucks front and rear, HELP

Ha Ha Ha.

I would have told them to get bent.
I just had 4.56's put in my 01 4x4. After all was said and done I ended up shelling out $1430 something for the front and rear. Theres no way in hell I would have spent 2000 let alone 3-3500.

The other place I got a quote from said it would be between 1400 and 1500. Both places I got a quote from were pretty much the same, within $50 at least. I went with the shop I did basically because they were about a half hour closer than the other.

wow, I would shop around some more for sure. I don't think it's gonna be something your going to want to try and tackle yourself, even being average mechanically inclined. From what I hear and read it's a pretty tedious job.

I'm putting 4:10's in front and rear with Detroit True-Trac limited slips. I purchased a new aluminum differential cover and everything installed will be right around $2000. That's for everything, gears, limited slips, new cover, bearings, oil and labor. It pays to shop around. The Ford dealership wanted $400 to change just my pinion seal. **** that, that's ridiculous. Hope this helps.

He can't correct his speedo by use of a chip/programmer since his is a 97. I have a 97 and the lift and tires on mine caused my speedo to be off by about 5-10 under normal highway speeds. I looked into using the Xcal2 to correct it but was told it could not be done.

i missed that in my earlier post disregard the use of a programer, you will need to change out your vss gear on the rear axle to correct your speedo this is easy to do and cheap, a good drivetrain shop will be able to get you the correct one, good luck

This site rocks!!! I found a very reputable jeep 4x4 guy who says 1500 parts and labor I will have to ask him about the VSS too

Now with 33x12.50 do I go with a 4:10 or 4:56???

That really depends on how much towing your going to be doing and how much highway traveling you do. 4.56's would give you a lot of low rpm power but would use a lot of gas at highway speeds. If you do a lot of city driving then I would go with 4.56's, if not then 4.10's. Hope this helps.
