Easy rear end/gear swap?
Easy rear end/gear swap?
I'm trying to find out if this will be easy or not. It seems like a straight forward swap, but I'm not sure. I have a limited slip diff. with 9.75/3.73 gears from a '97 4wd Expedition that I want to swap into my current 9.75/3.55 non-limited slip diff. for my '97 2wd F150. I'm not sure if the gears will fit in the current housing because of the ls. I have a good hold on mechanics, but I've never done gear swaps, let alone from ls to non ls. Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.
would it be posible to switch the whole axle? this would be easer than doing the gear swap(and cheaper too) if you swaped axles you wouldnt have to buy the master install kit that comes with all the bearings and seals, also you need a few tools that the average shadetree mech does not have, a bearing press, a magnetic base dial indicator, and a micromiter caliper, if you do plan to do this yourself let me know and i can go into detail and give you some tricks to make it easer, good luck
unfortunately I can't switch axles. The Expedition had 4 corner air suspension and disc brakes all around, so there aren no mounting points for my shocks to mount to and I have rear drums on my F150. There's a small flat area on each side of the axle where the air spring sat. I was hoping it would be an easy swap, but if I need special tools, it might be easier to have it done. Thanks for the info. bigtruck311.
