Question Rear axle problems

I have a '98 F150 off road 4x4, my problem is from a dead stop when I accelerate turnning either left or right I feel a jerking motion from the rear end. Also at 70 mph if I let up on the accelerator slightly I feel a slight rear end chatter. U-joints and slip yoke have been serviced. Rear axle code is 19 non LS. The question is, is this a major rebuild or is it a common service problem?

Do you hear any whining or howling noises when you are going down the road? If so does the noise change when you let of the gas. It sounds like you may have sloppy gears caused by a bad pinion bearing.

I have a bad pinion bearing and it does the same thing. It will clunk when I put it in reverse or if I take off from a stop sign without first letting it roll on its own a little.

if your sure it's coming from the rear end i would check to see if you have any major movement in your leaf spring bushings. you could be getting some movement from there that would cause those same symptoms. just a thought.

rear axle problems

Thanks for the info I'll take a look. Put new goodyear tires on rear and it seemed to help quite a bit. Still have a steady vibration at 68-70 mph can't put my finger on the problem. I have a non-LS rear.
