Will this work??

I have brand new 4:10 gears that I had bought for my 2001 Mustang GT but never put them in. My question is will these work in my 01 F150? I thought I read somewhere that they both have the 8.8 rear end. does anyone know if they'll work? I'd love to put them in my truck if they will. Thanks!

I bet if you look at both rear ends you'll be able to find out if they will work.

Also, I have no idea what gears my truck has in it currently. But I would think 4:10's would be a pretty nice improvement. I was gonna sell them but if they'll work in my F150, I'll just put them in there.

used gears are very very likely to make noise!

ALso, Lightnings have a 9.75 rear end, I thought the F150 had the same rear end. Maybe it's the F250 that has the same rear end.

mastang 2001 has the 8.8 rear, lightning and F-150 with the 5.4 have the 9.75 rear, the gears you have for your stang will not work on your lightning
good luck

I believe the 4.6 and smaller F150s used the 8.8. If you can actually look at both rear ends you will know for sure.

Sorry, I'm new to the F150 boards and wasn't clear in my post! :o I don't have a Lightning. It's an 01 supercab w/ 4.6. I posted in the Lightning board because it had the most people in it. Sorry Lighning guys.

I found some specs on the 01 and it looks like they came with either 8.8 or 9.75, depending on whether or not you got the tow package. So mine "may" have the 8.8. If it does, would the gears work? I know the Mustangs have 8.8. They are brand new FRPP 4.10 gears btw. Still in the box.

look at your rear end, if it is circle shaped you have the 8.8 and it will work, if it kinda looks like a stop sign then it is a 9.75 which i believe they only put in if it has a 5.4

That's good news! Thanks! I think it's the round one. I've only glanced at it but I'll get under and look at it today.

So will the 4.10's make a decent difference in how this truck feels? I know they make a big difference in the Stangs.

Read the tag on the rear end bolt, it will tell you if its an 8.8 or not.
If its an 8.8 and the other one was an 8.8, yes they will work.
Just make sure you check it and shim it right, all three shims.
If you do not shim it right it will have noise.

I looked at the tag on the rear end and it has a series of numbers on it and it says "88" in the number group. It doesn't say "8.8" though. Does that mean it still is an 8.8 though? Also, I looked on the door sticker and under the "AXLE" section, it has a 19. Anyone know what that stands for?

The 88 in the number number group means it is an 8.8 rear end.

Example:

S832J
31 88 5DC3

would mean that it is a Ratio 3.31 to 1, 8.8 rear end, made on 3 April 1995 at the Sterling Plant. Also there is a 3 in front of the 31 but you can not see it most of the time until you take the tag off.

A code 19 means that thr rear axle is a 3800 Lbs. capacity with a Ratio of 3.55 to 1 or the drive shaft goes around just over 3 and half times to one revolution of the tire.

Cool! thanks for all the info subford! You know your F150's! So now that I guess I have 3.55's, I'm wondering if 4.10's would be worth installing?

Yeah the 4.10's will be a nice improvement, but you could always just sell them to me
