Question 3 dealers told me could'nt change ratios???

I've been told by three different Ford service centers that I could not change my 3.55's to 4.10 or 4.11. They state that the computer and emmisions will be off. Or some load of s**t like that. I know for a fact that others have changed gears and some even to 4.56's. Also I have read somewhere on the list that someone got theirs done at the dealership?? I think the lazy farts don't want to do the swap. Any opinions? Whoever got theirs done at a dealership I'd love the name and number of that particular shop. Thanks.

They are correct that the computer would be off. However, the computer can be reset to reflect your new gear ratio. Perhaps this "service department" does NOT know how to change the computer.
Ask them to contact someone at Ford who can tell them the correct procedure.
Remember: The 'Customer' is ALWAYS right!
You are the customer. They should provide the service required to meet your needs.
Good luck.

My dealership would do the job for 2000$ cdn.
I have 3.08 gears and wanted to go to 3.55. They told me that it would take 8 hours to do both diffs and it will not effect my trucks warranty.

Cool

HI!... OLE BLUE : I was the one who had 4.10 gears installed at my dealer. I supplied all the needed parts and oil. They charged me $401.41(CAN) for the labour of the installation. My "99" F-150 speedo could not be recalibrated no matter what the tech tried. I called MIKE T. and he told me that my "99" speedo could be recalibrated with a custom program to my chip. The only draw back is that SUPERCHIPS can only adjust the speedo up to a 3.99 gear ratio. So with me having 4.10 gears my speedo will still be off by 5-7%. In other words if you are doing 100mph in reality, your speedo will be reading 105-107mph. Thats acceptable to me!LOL! Right now my speedo is off by about 10-15mph at 100mph. My dealer is "MOE CAMPBELL LINCOLN MERCURY" in WINDSOR, ONTARIO CANADA. Their phone # is (519) 972-6500. Hope this helps you out!

OLE BLUE, I have a 97 4x4 that had 3.55 and switched them with 4.56 and had no problems. A local shop installed them. I did change the speedo gear at the rear of the trans(took all of 5 minutes) which kept the speedo within 2 mph at 65. From what i've been told, the speedo has to be within 5% of actual speed not to cause problems with the computer. The dealer told me that, so who knows if thats correct or not. All I know is I have had no problems and the truck run great!

I'm in California and I asked several dealers the same question. Few US dealers will do it. They are concerned with pollution laws and CAFE regulations (fuel economy). Most dealers don't want to risk any possibility of a hassle with Ford or the government. You are better off taking your truck to a shop that does nothing but differential and drive train work anyhow. You know that your truck will be worked on by someone that specializes in that type of work.

OLE BLUE

I went from 3.55 to 4.1 in my X , in 1999 and newer you have to recal the computer. A dealer by me tried twice and failed. 3rd time they let me drive the computer. It seems that the program displays all ratio options but would only accept factory ratios. So in my case the only option that would work was 3.73. So that is what I did. NOW lets get to the fun part you also have to provide tire rev per mile. So My X has the 17” tires that are 2” higher than the 16” so I calculated the revs per mile for the 16 and chose that option. Yes it worked but it is off 3% “Better than 17%”. I would have liked to give it a second shot but the dealer was getting upset with me programming my truck. Everyone was watching !! Ford for whatever reason has made it difficult to do this trivial task. “BTW the computer at the dealer needs the Nov. update”!!! So where I am going is if you put big tires and change you ratio you’re not reeling going from 3.55 to 4.1. The bigger tires reduce your ratio. So you or the dealer has to get creative for this. The truck great with the new ratio but it is a pain in the a##. So good luck and if you need any other info I have a fax from ford how to get in program mode with their computer.
Don
