4x4 problem Please help ?

My truck feels like its grabing the road when ever its in 4x4. It almost feels like its dragging the rear wheels. Some one said, I might have a different gear ration on the rear. Would that cause my problem? In dirt and mud it seems to be fine, but snow and hard dirt/ pavement (testing purposes only) it will not roll smooth. I just put a new transfer case in it too. thanks in advance for your help.. If I need to change gear ratio, whats that gonna run.

Sounds like you have different ratios in your front & rear axles. Try this: Put some tape to mark the exact bottom of all four tire. On loose dirt drive very slowly forward with a straight steering wheel. Have a friend count the revolutions as you move forward. 10 ought to be enough. Stop with the tape straight down on front or rear. Check the position of the tape. In theory, they should be positioned exactly the same. If not, you have different ratio axles. Or you could open up the melons, and check that way. I don't know the cost for a ring and pinion change. I had one done 20 yrs ago for $350 (TrakLoc), but that was taking the diff out and bringing it to the shop. If there is an easier way, someone may post. You may check the tag on the axles, in the event someone changed out the whole thing. Good Luck

Boy Howdy! You create severe binding in the entire drive train. I wouldn't drive in 4WD even on a slippery surface if that is indeed the case.

Did it do it before you changed tcases? Makes me wonder if the tcase has a funny gear set in it or something if it didn't do it before. Could be something as stupid as the guy torched a rear diff and swapped the whole thing for one he thought was the same ratio. You could have 3.73's in the rear and 3.55's in the front. That would do funny things (bad but funny).

Angry

Yeah, it did the same thing with the old tcase. With the help and answers I received from you guys, I am about 100% sure its the gearing in the rear. thanks for all the help. Time to go spend some money, AGAIN.

Found the problem

I had a mechanic check the truck out, I have a 3.55 in the front and a 3.21 in the rear. I had a junk yard rear on the truck. Since I have six inch lift on 35" tires, they said I need a 4.56 to make up for the tire lag and power loss. Is this a true statement. It's costing about 1100 to fix and replace the front and rear.

You either need to make the front and rear gear ratios the same, or run 36s in the rear and 39s up front.

At the very least, you should have the rear end re-geared to match the front. That'll allow you to run the 4wd again. If you're going to have them open it up, and seeing as you'r running 36s on it, re-gearing with 4.56s will make a HUGE difference in the performance on those meats.

$1100.for both front and rear 4.56s doesn't sound bad to me. While they're in there, what about some lockers?
