I thought that those fluids were already synthetic from the factory?

The rear differential is synthetic (and 'never needs to be changed unless the axle is submerged under water'..owners manual)...and I also thought the rest had synthetic also...but I am not 100% sure.

Steve. Changed my drivetrain fluids to Amsoil. Didn't notice a big difference but the added protection is a big plus.

WRT "fill for life" fluids, consider this. A gear set or assembly will go through a run-in period where the surfaces of the gears will wear very slighty to accomadate the profile of the mating tooth surface. This run-in produces very fine shavings that will remain in the oil bath unless purged out.
It is standard proceedure in critical gear drives to flush the system with clean oil after a set period. I have always followed this thinking automotive transmissions, transfer cases, and differentials. You will be surprised at the accumulation of metalic material you see!

HMMMMM...... i will have to check my owners book i didnt think that it had syn fluids in it..... but what about the transfer case??? Thw fluid is free we buy it here buy the drum, is there a additive that has to be added to the rear for limited slip with the syn??? I know there is a additve when you use reg lube but not sure with syn lube. One other question i heard that if you order the ls option you get a ls unit in front drive as well has any one had the front drive apart to check??? It has been my experiance that you do not get a ls unit in front .

Well i spoke to the dealer 2000 come with synt in the front and rear drive's and the friction modifier(additive) has to be use as well if you have a limited slip. The transfer case use the mecron 5 in it. On the ls being in front drive as well they said they had not ever seen it stock. So...... i answered my own question thanks to those who did offer in put though.

Just a note about fluid "flushes" and the lifetime crap:

I had my gears changed and the front pinion gear has a few "chips" missing near the point of the gears. These were undoubtedly floating around in the lube. I've now got ~500 miles on the new gears and the lube will be changed Thursday.

Nomo: Are the tooth chips the Reason for the gear change, or did you notice them After the gear change?

If the latter, have a good gear man check the set-up, as chipped teeth can result from a bad set-up.

It was after I had the gears changed to compensate for larger tires. I got to keep the factory gears. The original front pinion has several "tips" missing. The tech didn't say anything about chunks in the fluid, but the front wheel bearings were totally shot- big gouges in the rollers with only 38,000 miles on them.
