Steering Wheel Locks While Driving
Steering Wheel Locks While Driving
I have a 98 F150 Supercab 4X4. Every now and then the steering wheel locks up when I go to turn left. Initially the dealer thought it might be the steering wheel lock pin catching, but when it happens there is no clicking...just resistance. After a few hard yanks to the left, the wheel releases. Unfortunately I have not been able to replicate this unsafe condition for the dealer. The dealer "thinks" it might be the steering box but has quoted $1000 to replace it w/o any guarantee that will solve the problem.

There is a gear mesh set screw on top of the gear box that can be adjusted by loosening the locknut. I have read that if this is too tight by as little as 1/4 turn it can cause the gears to lock up. I have actually tightened mine a little to reduce slop but I may put it back to be on the safe side, could be dangerous. You could try loosening by 1/4 to 1/2 turn without doing any harm though.
My brother had the same problem with his 99 z-71. His was to the right. He found if he loosened the pressure the steering wheel would turn more easily. His problem was a bad seal inside the steering box. My buddy owns a repair shop, and has some good sources. We had my brothers box rebuilt for less than $200 and put it in ourselves. It's been fine for the last 10,000 miles. Good luck.
