1997 Front Differential question

I'm in the process of fixing hub locking fork assembly on the front axle on my 1997 F150. I noticed that the axle shaft gears slip very easily with little or no effort in the differential while I spin the drive shaft flange. Is this normal or does the ring gear need to be replaced?? Thanks
