4WD is engaged by a vacumn mechanism that is in the differential. There are no hubs and the axle shafts, but not the diff turn all of the time. I had electronic shift on my Ranger, but I never liked it. I was always afraid that it would not work.

Cool

I had manual hubs on my '88 F-150. I then bought a '92 S-15 Jimmy (I don't know why) with the electronic transfer case. A '99 F-150 followed with the electronic 4WD. I now have a Y2K SD F-250 with the ESOF. I have had zero problems with any of the electronic 4X4 systems to this date. I prefer turning a **** on the dash to pulling a lever on the floor. Every one of these vehicles was/is used for plowing snow too. I don't criticize anyone for their choice either. This is just my experience. Whatever you choose, I hope that it works flawlessly. Enjoy your truck.

Dude, I think this post was started in February of the year 2000. Start your own post about it in the 2004-current part of the forum. Better yet, there are two posts started by me on the whole ESOF vs. manual shift. These are only a couple of days old.
