replaceing cv half shaft

I have had a bad cv boot on my drivers side for some time know and am planning to change the whole haft shaft out. I was wondering if any one has done this and how hard will it be. I have a 2000 4x4 sc.

If you are pretty mechanically inclined, it isn't so bad. You will need a 12 mm, 12 point socket to remove the bolts that hold the halfshaft to the axle assy. Also you will need a socket to fit the nut on the end of the cv axle where it comes through the hub. Remove the bolt at the top of the steering knuckle to upper ball joint and let the knuckle hang. Remove the sway bar end link(for extra clearance) You'll have to loosen the opposite side end link for removal. Remove the hub nut, remove the cv shaft splines from the hub, pull out on the top of the steering knuckle until the splines clear. Unbolt the other end of the cv shaft and remove it. Assemble in reverse order.

The ball joint is only serviced in the upper control arm assy. If it isn't broke, don't fix it. No special tool is needed, just a pry bar to hold down on the control arm while removing the jam bolt.
