rear axle free play

I dont know if I have a problem with my axle or not. when I put the rear on jacks and pulled the wheel off I noticed that I was able to pull the hub in and out about 1/4". The opposite side does the same thing and I was unable to find any information on axle free play in my manual. Is this normal or is my axle about to fall apart?

A 1/4" is a little much, the c clips might be worn out. If the rear brakes are making noise when you turn not using the brakes, time to replace. If not let er eat.......

It is possible that they're worn a little, but 1/4" is not very far from normal. My 97 F150 had that much play from the time I bought it with 42k on it. My 91 Ranger also has had that much play from when I got it at 41k. Its the nature of the beast.

Hmm. Same thing with my 98 150. Clunk clunk over uneven roads. I got it with 94,000 miles and the first thing I did was the brakes. As usual the aluminum rims were a little tight on the hub. I was surprised when I first pulled on the wheel and seen that much back and forth play. Did they do this for a reason other then to remind us we're driving a truck? I would like to know if there is anyone out there who fixed this.
