Shifting to 4x4....
Shifting to 4x4....
Ok...a dumb question. I just picked up a 99 4x4. I have no idea what i need to do to put the thing in 4x4......it has no owners manual. I'm not sure if i have to be stopped......moving....in neutral...park....etc. Can someone let me know...since I have 2' of snow now...LOL!
I'm used to the electronic shift-on-the-fly deal....not this old grab the gear thing......

You can download a manual in PDF format from http://www.motorcraftservice.com/vdi...p?menuIndex=15 for as far back as 96.
Your manual shift is almost identical to the shift on the fly. To engage 4Hi simply pull the lever into the first position at a reasonable speed. To engage 4Lo you will need to be stopped and in neutral and then follow the pattern on the shift lever. Disengagement is the same. The transfer case is electronic - everything works the same except that the little dial on the dash is easier to use and less intrusive than the floor shift.
We have two late model F-150's - one with the floor shift and one with the shift on the fly. They work very similarly except for the low range engagement - the floor shift one can be difficult to get into and out of low range. The shift on the fly (XLT) truck is simply a matter of moving a dial and waiting for engagement.
Good luck with your truck and enjoy it. One of our trucks is a 1999 model with the 5.4 and you'll find plenty of posts talking about problems with these trucks. Ours has 80,000 trouble-free miles on it.
