Question Excessive play in the differential?

I changed both u-joints.The back one was really shot! I also greased the yoke with the grease I got from a Ford tech.It seems to be better but I think the differential has excessive play in it.I can grab the driveshaft and try to turn it and the pinion flange moves, about 3/16 th to 1/4 of an inch.Is this too much?

This is my driveshaft.
Members said that this is normal when I posted this question some time ago.

F150, I could not get the wav. to play. Are you saying you have the same amount of play in your driveshaft and this is normal?

I am not sure how much mine was exactely.
But 1/4 inch is about 6 mm, right! (no inches here)
I had as much, I guess.

You need a new wmv-codec for that wmv file to play.
It also shows the upward play of the slipyoke.
Try to get that vid running.

I had the rear U-joint go bad last week. After a few days of endurring anoying squeaking every time I accelerated, I took the driveshaft off last wednesday, thursday I brought the driveshaft and the 2 u-joints I had bought to a mechanic, cause I could not get the joints off. Friday at noon I picked it up, re-installed, with a good coating of PTFE grease inside the slip-yoke. While it was off and I was waiting for my driveshaft friday morning, I also did a rear brake job.

Anyway, the u-joint change fixed the squeak, the grease in the slip-yoke fixed the bump when stoping or taking off, the brake job fixed the sticking e-brake and I got new pads in the rear. All in all, I had a good weekend.

For the record, I replaced both U-joints with greasable ones, and the rear pads with Raybestos. I did not have the drive shaft re-balanced after the U-joint change, and I feel no vibrations yet, tried it up to 145km/h (~90mph), So I think I'm in the clear.
