Axle removal problem
I was helping my brother-inlaw replace his rear seals on his 2001 Supercrew. He went and purchased a chilton manual and we got started. After removing the diff cover and draing the fluid, we noticed there was an extra part that the manual didn't show. It is an S shaped piece that fits between the two axle shaft ends, basically keeping tension on the two shafts pushing them to the outside. I think this piece was added to fix the 1/16" play that I have read a lot of posts about on this site. The piece is basically a spring that needs to be compressed to remove. After about an half hour of working on it we finally got it off. Now the problem is we can't get the c-clips off. The axle's are not moving in far enough to allow the c-clips to come out. Does anyone have any input on this? The manual we have shows the axles moving in much further than what were getting. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
I'm only asking this because you didn't mention it......
You did remove the center "pin" that holds the spider gears in place, right??
That "should" allow you to be able to push in each axle far enough to remove the C clip.
Be careful not to turn the axle at all while the pin is out or it'll knock out the spider gears and it'll be a PITA to put them back in.
After you remove the axles, put the pin back in so that nothing happens to them while you are putting the axles back in.
If you've already done this, and have removed the spring clip, you should still be able to push the axles in far enough to be able to remove that C clip......
Good luck!

mitch hit the nail on the head! pull that pin out and be careful-don't want a mess w/those spider gears. i replaced all the bearings in my rear end at 150K-pinion bearings worn slap out(oodles of play) and figured while i was in there might as well replace carrier bearings too. about 160K on her now and and no probs
someone did tell me to use 75-90 instead of the 75-140 that the # on my diff tag calls for(owners manual says 75-90 also) being that i don't do any heavy towing(21ft bayliner now and again). said that the 75-90 would be better for the cold starts in the winter even though it doesn't get that cold here-said the 75-140 was in there b/c of the towing package so i went ahead w/the Mobil-1 75-90.
GOOD LUCK
