Question Diff upgrade vs Supercharger ??

I recently put on some 305/45/22 and naturally lost the torque that I had in the 3.55 rear end. I called the local dealer and asked for a price on an upgrade to a 4.10. He said $1000 and they do them all the time. I asked about going to a higher ?4.56 maybe. He politely and surprisingly said he did not have the confidence in the crew to make it work right. "They can make the 4.10 work with no issues, but might have problems with 4.56."

I did not ask him about adding a supercharger.

So, I'm asking everyone here. Should I go with a gear upgrade or a just a supercharger or both? I'd like to do the gear first then save up for the supercharger.

I am concerned with uping the gear to 4.10 then adding a supercharger later and how this would affect the transmission and gears?

Any advice is GREATLY appreciated!

I would think that the 4.10's would do a better job. A supercharger would be great but then there is the possibility of driveline parts failing. I don't know what the exact numbers would be but putting 22's on here makes that 3.55 more like a 3.31. Even if you did a supercharger you would propbably still want to do the gears. Also, a grand for gears is less than a reliable supercharger would cost.

Good luck!

you'll want to go with the 4.10's, i would expect that a dealer would give you a price like that. if you've got a 2wd you can get the 4.10's from randy's ring and pinion for like $150 and check out your local 4X4 shop (they do the installs all the time) for the install, i got a quote of as low as $300. now if you have 4wd then just double all the numbers (since there's 2 diffs) and you'll get around $900. so i would tell the dealer to go fly a kite.

Those are tall tires. You'd need 4.10s to get back to where you were. I'd install 4.56s, but that's one personal opinion. It's too bad you can't get 4.30s for a 9.75" like you can in the 8.8". If the installer can do 4.10s, but is uncomfortable with 4.56s, that would be my first sign of weakness. Off-road shops install 4.56s in 9.75" rear ends constantly. The supercharger will not hurt your factory or aftermarket gears in a large 9.75" rear end. Your transmission is another story. You will need a shift kit to start. Your plan for the gears first sounds fine. I love superchargers; get one if you can.

Nice bend over pricing Ford offers to have such little confidence. 9.75" gears cost substantially more than 8.8" gears. They cost $350-$400, plus installation kit, plus labor. A complete 4X2 setup is more likely $700.

as far as i understand the lightning's and F250, F350 use the 9.75" rear end and the F150's use an 8.8" . with those you can get a new set on ebay for at around $150

It can be alot cheaper if you have an 8.8" rear end. F-150s with the 4.2 or the 4.6 use the 8.8". F-150s with 5.4s use the 9.75", including the Lightning. His sig lists the 5.4. I was talking about new parts; sorry for the confusion.

No problem-o. I bet there are some 9.75" gear sets out there in any number of places for a good deal.

Transmission?

I was looking to upgrade to a 4.10 since i'll be getting some new tires and a lift soon. Will this hurt my transmission at all or will i need to replace some other parts in the truck?
Thanks for your time.
