4x4-low not engaging

I've got a 2003 F-150 and i can't get it into 4-low. I've got an auto transmission and a manual 4-wheel drive system. I come to a complete stop, put it in neutral and go from 4-high to neutral, but when I try to go to 4-low, it just grinds. I don't have an owners manual for it, so any insight would be very helpful. Thanks

I think you have to have your foot on the brakes, at a complete stop, and the trans in neutral or park (can't remember which).

It needs to be in neutral to shift into 4lo. With an electric case it won't even try to shift unless you're stopped with your foot on the brakes and in neutral so it won't grind from that. With the manual you can try and force it which can cause grinding. You need to be at a complete stop and not moving at all when you do this or it will try and grind. If you are and its grinding the gears inside and not syncronizing and when you try to switch gearsets it will grind. I have never torn apart a newer tcase so I can't offer any help as to what to check.

Is your tranny in neutral as well and not just the t-case?

That's my guess.

thanks for your help, my problem was that i was following the diagram on the shifter which is misleading. it shows to go down, left and then down again. Instead i held it to the far left the whole time and it slipped right in.
