eaton e-lock?
eaton e-lock?
hey, i just blew my detroit, and decided I was tired of having a locker all the time on the road, so i ordered a eaton e-lock for the rear of the F-1fiddy(air shipped to me for monday). has anybody been running this diff? do you like it? any install hints? and breakage? is it a nice unit? thanks,
Phillip

Sorry no experience with the E-locker here. I guess you'll be the guinea pig on this one. I imagine it will be pretty tough though. Eaton is an excellent manufacture and alway has a quality product.
Where did you order it? I have looked into it extensively. The shops around here haven't seen one in use. I don't think they've actually been available until very recently. I have the instruction manual and it seems pretty decent as far as an install is concerned. Are you going to do it yourself? The hardest part is re-setting the gears after you put it in and also drilling 1/2 inch hole in your diff. The Guys at Eaton swear there is no problem when crossing water etc. I'm still trying to decide if I should buy one or repair my Powertrax No Slip.

Yeah, i got a bud at Modern Motors in calgary, and he knew I would like one, so he got one of the first ones sent here. I am not to worried about the install as i have done countless gear-setups (ok maybe 5 trucks)
and the hole, I am not to worried, I just want it strong enough to beat on. I will have to make sure to post how the install is, and how she works, i will break it, if it can be broken, and so it should be a good test. Plus Urban, you know I like water.
. Hey, I cant find the instructions on the net, could you e-mail them to me (if in computer form) to Ignerence@hotmail.com or let me knwo where you got em? (ie web site?) The locker is still not here, (should be, maybe tomorrow
) Oh, if this one works nice, I will order a 28 spline one for the front, and let you know about it too. Thanks.

I talked with the guys over at Eaton. They sent me an electronic copy which doesn't have images and then when I asked, the mailed me a hardcopy of the instructions so I could see the diagrams. I'll email you the electronic copy when I get home from work today.

If I was to venture a guess on the durability of this locker I'd say its biggest downfall will be the fact that its a selectable locker. It won't be as strong as say a full carrier detroit, but it should hold up well. I would say its going to be very similar in strength as the ARBs. The nice thing about the Elockers is that you don't have to rely on air lines which can get cut or knicked and then you lose your locker. Heck at the rate you're going with this truck just go buy a full spool for it and find a tow rig and trailer to take it around

thanks for the e-mail urban. The install should be easy (knock on wood) and I kinda was thinking of going with the full case detroit for strength, but I got a screaming deal on this one(the eaton), we will just have to see how it holds up, and yeah, I would like to tow this truck, but it has to last me untill i am done university(another 2-3 years), then we will see about some cooler mods (you know, portals, exo, coils/colovers/ links, Big block, doubler t-case.......
now I am dreaming. thanks.

What's the deal Ignerance? What's the word on the E-locker. I'm still getting poor customer service from Richmond Gear (aka Powertrax) on the parts for my no-slip. If I don't get service from them soon, I'll have to buy th Eaton as to not waste the summer.
yeah, I got it, and put it in. IT is awsome. the carrier on it is huge when compaired to the stock one, and it was a pretty easy set up in the diff. Drilling the 1/2" hole was really nothing because the cast steel used for te housing is really soft. wireing was also very simple, and the unit came with all the wireing required. It works great, with the switch on, I have a spool, no clicks, booms or bangs either. But when the switch is off, I have a open diff again, and man, after 3 yrs of driving with the old locker, I can honestly say, Open diffs are nice on the road. I plan one for the front, one day. good luck.

I'm sorry to hear you had some problems with your Powertrax unit. I think you remember I also had one. When mine broke, I contacted Powertrax directly and they were very helpfull. They sent me a new spring kit (which is what went wrong with it). I replaced it with an Eaton LS anyway. The LS is just not as good but it is more comfortable. Maybe an E-locker would be the best compromise. I just don't feel like rebuilding my rear AGAIN!!

I have a brand new F150 Heritage Supercab. I have a 5000 pound combination boat/trailer to haul. I got a super deal on an "one only at this price" advertised special, but it doesn't have the limited slip. I only need LS to get the boat up the launch ramp about 5-8 time a year. Getting down the road is no problem. I am also a snow skier and it rains here 7 months of the year. It looks like there are some serious down-sides to having an LS. A local shop can install an Eaton E-lock for about $700-800. I'm thinking maybe I'd be better off just putting some weight in the bed over the wheels to get that boat up the ramp rather than paying to end up with a truck that will get really squirrely when it's wet or snowy.
