Post Locking Hubs on 97 & Up.

In simple terms, can somebody explain how the
97 and up 4x4 systems work. I have heard mixed signals on whether or not you need to back up thirty feet to unlock hubs. And, I'm also curious about fords new system in general.

Greetings!

The '97 - '00 4X4's do not have automatic locking (or manual for that matter) hubs. The front differential uses a center disconnect. This actually disconnects the drive shafts from the transfer case and employs CV joints (like a front wheel drive car). The connect/disconnect is activated via a pulse-vacuum mechanism. You DO NOT have to drive in reverse to disconnect the hubs and get rid of the ratchet sound as before.
