what is going on!

Ill try to make this short. I just had my ring and pinion swapped out from 3.55 to 4.56. I have to do ten (10 mile) trips no more than 50 mph as part of the break in as well as another 200 regular driving before I tow. The mechanic did 2 of the ten already and said they did them in 4 wheel drive to break in the front as well as the rear. He said do straight runs because turning is harder on the gears. I unfortunately forgot the whole turning thing and tried to turn into a subdivision while in 4x4. When I began to turn the front gears seemed to bind up or get stuck. Once I straightened the tires back out it ran fine again. In conclusion, I can go straight in 4x4 but once I try turning the gears feel like they bind up. Any ideas on whats going on. I wanted to get some advice from you pros before I called the mechanic back

You'll feel that "binding" to some extent any time you drive on pavement while in 4WD. I dont think you did any damage.

I agree with Lepew. Probably no damage at all. Going straight in 4wd the front and rear tires are spinning the exact same speed and wont cause a bind. If you vary off of a straight line even slightly the front wheels and rear wheels cover different ground and unless your in AWD the front and rear driveshafts will fight each other and cause a bind. Unless you heard a bang from something breaking I think your OK.

Thanks!!! Today I did the four wheels in the grass and it turned fine. So no problems here. These new 4.56 gears are great. If there is anyone out there debating on 4.10 or 4.56 with 35" tires, go with the 4.56. They will be unhappy with the 4.10. It wouldnt be enough for the 35's. Thanks again!!!!!!!!!!

Thinking about getting 35's after the lift and was wondering what kind of rpm's are you turning at hwy speeds (65) with those gears?

Thanks,
Jason

Well, my speedo is still off so im not completely sure when Im going 65 or 70. I am at around 2100 rpms when I think Im going 70. When I go with the flow of traffic on the highway (which I assume is 75+) I am turning 2200. I hope this helps! When I get the speedo corrected Ill tell you for sure. Not sure when that will be though.
