Post need to upgrade rear axle to LSD

I was under the impression that the LSD was included in the ORP package. Was I wrong!!!
What would be best way to upgrade my rear axle to LSD; take it to the dealer? buy some type of locker? I need the LSD because I surf fish every week during the summer. I would appreciate any advice. Thank you

Greetings!!!

Unfortunately, the LSD is NOT included with the ORP, as it should be. Dealers apparently think that 4X4's don't require the LSD. Most of the 4X2's I've seen on lots are equipped with the LSD, however. Guess its always best to special order your truck. (!!)
IMHO, Ford should make the LSD STANDARD on these trucks.

Anyways, I'm in the same boat as you. My '00 Lariat came with every option, except the LSD. I assumed there were many aftermarket options as there were with my '95 E.B. Bronco, but there are not (due to the rear diff size change). There are NO companies (including Auburn or Detroit) making LSD's for the 9.75" Ford diffs yet. The only choice is the OEM Dana-Spicer unit from your local dealer's parts counter.

PowerTrax is supposedly coming out with a TracLoc locker/posi diff for the F-150, but they have been saying this for 8 months now. I'm not sure if these units are true lockers (a nightmare for a daily driver!), or a LSD's.

LSD's are great, even with the 4x4's. With the 5.4L's, the torque tends to spin the wheels like crazy on wet pavement. (Tire change could help of course.) My buddy has the same truck as me, but with the LSD, and he rarely spins his tires on cornering, etc.

Let us know if you find anything....

Steve

I am in the same boat. We got our first snow last week that I had the chance to test my 97 (bought used). I had to engage the front wheels to get out of the slightest incline. I, too, and interested in making this improvement. This should definitely be standard on all 4X4 models. I guess we'll settle for 3 wheel drive until an acceptable mod comes along.

dlsipe - you means 2 wheel drive - 1 front and 1 rear wheel. Front diffs are also open. I'm in same boat and will be shortly adding LS. In Southern California, I have found 2 shops that will do it for about $500 parts and labor.

Ron,

I don't know about the front dif. By the way it bites and jerks the truck when turning, I'm not so sure there's not some type of LS in the front. Got forbid I leave the front's engaged when I hit pavement. I can hardly keep hold of the steering wheel.

Wink

Ya'll better get that LSD out of your truck! That stuff's bad for it, and beside's, it's illegal! I have to agree with dlsipe, the truck definately FEELS like it has a LS up front; I don't think that it does though.

Cool

I'm in the same boat as you all. I've got my dealer working up a price now for the OEM unit. I'll let you guys know how much it turns out. I called Auburn, they said it'll be another month or so before they have any. Powertrax has an automatic locker, but that's not really what I'm looking for. Other than that, I don't see any other options for the 9.75".
