Noise from transfer case

Hi, all. I just bought a 2003 F-150, 4.6, FX4 with manual 4X4. There is a grinding noise coming from my transfer case that gets louder as I go faster. It goes away when I move the shifter to the left. The Ford dealer said that it is normal, but it is really annoying in my brand new dream truck.

Anyone out there know what may be causing the noise? Is it normal? Can anything be done to get rid of it or lessen it?

I am new to F-150s, 4X4s, and this site. By the way, you guys have a great thing going here. I will be coming back often. Thanks in advance for any help.

Hey Stinger44

My 2001 does the same thing, I have actually removed the transfer case shifter to test and driven it, no noise of course. Unfortunatly it is a normal driveline noise that gets transfered up the shifter. Ford was aware of it, but has no fix. Replacing the shifter assy on some trucks made it better, but it ususally never goes away completely. Maybe somebody has a fix, I have not found one, I have tried moving the shifter assy, dampening it, isolating the shift lever with rubber and no luck. Still makes noise that goes away with slight pressure to the left. If you find a fix, post it.
