howling/rumbling HELP

Hi there! My 97 4.6L 4x4 has 140000 kms on it, and I just had the transmission fluid changed last week. I drove to the cottage, and it developing a really bad driveline noise. When I am on the throttle it is a howling whir, when I coast there is nothing you can hear, and when engine braking ie 2nd gear it is a bad rumbling noise almost a clicking.
Any ideas?
I thought wheel bearing but wouldn't that be all the time
maybe rear end or tranny. The noise is definately not from the front end. U-joint???

I go to pick it up today.....I think its going to be about $800 bucks. Had I known before I would have taken it to a "mom & pop" store. If I had known this was coming I would've probably saved for an air locking diff ........just replaced the lower ball joints last week $900 ......not much time to save. I can't complain though as I've never had to sink any money other than gas oil brakes and tires into this thing before now.. Im at 147000 kms
