4x4 controls

hey im not really into the mechanics of these trucks, but i got a question about 4x4's. ive been looking to buy one and have seen most of them with the electronic switch on the dash for 4wh and 4wl, but one it looked like a manual shifter on the floor for the 4wd. is one more prone to mechanical problems? do you guys have a preference? thanks

I don't think it really matters. I have the MSOF and I am glad i do. There are more parts and controls involved with the ESOF, so in theory more to go wrong. There have been numerous posts here about the little shift motor on the transfer case going bad with the ESOF. But there are just as many people who will defend the ESOF. If you are looking at a new truck I wouldn't worry about it. If it's used I would lean towards the mechanical for ease in repairs down the road. Good luck in your search.

I have also heard that the manual hubs are less prone to problems. My previous truck I had for 6 years with manual hubs and shift lever, no problems. My current 03 Super crew came standard with the shift on the fly. If it was not standard I probably would opt for a manual. On the other hand I can't wait for the first snowy day and it engages at the touch of a button.

All of the 97+ trucks are auto locking. It doesn't matter if you have the **** on the dash (electronic) or the floor shifter (mechanical). They don't actually have hubs, they are CV joints from the front diff.

Unless it's so cold that the transfer case freezes and it doesn't do anything when you put it in 4x4. I hate when that happens, but there's nothing you can do about that, manual or electronic, if it's cold, it's cold.
