How do I know if I have Limited Slip?
How do I know if I have L.S. or not? I am installing a LockRight locker and it is not fitting. They don't work on an L.S. Here is the part# on on the diff tag that was attached. S8698

From what I've read on this board about the subject, you have a limited slip rear end with 3.55:1 gears. The 3L55 on your tag is what indicates this. Take a look at the below thread for more info or do a search for limited slip or the like for even more.

If the code on the door says XH9 you have the limited slip if yours say X19 you have a regular axel. Mine is a regular axel I wish I had the limited slip but the 3.55 regular is far better than the standard 3.08 gear.

Thanks for the answers. I don't know that limited slip is worth the money on a 4x2. I still get pushed sideways, but go forward as well on snow.

The limited slip diff is definately worth the $265.00!! especially with the 4X2. The limited slip (or POSI as GM likes to call it) will help prevent wheel spin in the event that you loose traction on one of the rear wheels. The limited slip differential will sense the "slippage" and through a clutch or spring mechanism, will transfer more torque to the wheel that is not slipping, and will help your traction. Most, if not all 4x2's should have this option. In my opinion, all trucks (including 4X4's) should have some sort of limited slip, differential. With the 5.4 especially, as this engine produces heaps of torque.

Well, I put my diff back together. Has anyone put a limited slip back together? There is a spring clip that goes between the two side gears and the pinon shaft goes between that clip. I could not get the clip back in. I don't understand why they put it in there. You have c-clips holding the side gears to the axle and the pinion shaft has no play, plus the spider gears go between the side gears. Someone let me know if i'm in trouble.

My friend has a 96 (the old style) and he checked his and it said 12. Does anybody know how he can tell if he has LS or a reg axle? Or, what the 12 signifies?

Don't woory about the door tags. All you need is the numbers on the diff. cover tag.
You said your number is a 3L55. That means you have a 3.55:1 with Limited slip. If you do not have the "L" (ex. 3 55), then you have the open rear end.
