I have a 99 Ford Ranger 4x4 with the 4.0L engine and SOF. I ordered a 2000 Lariat 4x4 with the 5.4L engine, tow pkg, off road pkg, and SOF. I was wondering if the Lariat's 4WD system is like the Ranger's which disconnects at the hubs and the transfer case using a vacuum operated system. Or do the front driveshafts and differential always turn in 2WD, 4WDH, and 4WDL i.e. transfer case disconnect only?

The F-150 uses an axle disconnect system. Both axles turn all the time whether 4wd is in use or not. The differential however does not turn and neither does the front drivshaft when you are not using 4wd.

So the F150 has a more robust 4x4 system than the Ranger, but perhaps not as fuel efficient? Thanks for your help though...the dealers here had no idea.

Exactly, the idea is to do away with the weak link of most 4wd systems, being the hubs. I don't think it affects milage much if any, chevy as well as dodge have used this setup for years. The only thing I don't like about it is that the CV joints are constantly moving and wearing where as with hubs they would remain still, oh well at least I don't have to worry about a blown hub.

BTW The F-150 uses a vacumn "thingy" for lack of the correct name for it to slide one axle out. I think the one on the right side stays connected and turn the spider gears inside the diff, somebody correct me if I am wrong. I am not surprised that the dealer knew nothing it is a wonder that they did not make up some BS to tell you anyway. I am surprised at how little dealers of any make of vehicle know about the products that they sell. I guess they are not all gear heads like me who must know how everything works and why.
