T-Case Chain Durability ??
T-Case Chain Durability ??
Hi!
Just read these t-cases run with chains and it brought back a few past horrors! I hope you guys can put my fears to rest.(?)
I had an old 79 Jeep CJ7 auto w/ Quadratrac full time 4WD, and had a great time looking into the back end of that t-case multiple times replacing that #&*@ chain.
Has anyone had to do a chain job on their t-case? How long might the chain last, and under what driving conditions?
I'm guessing it is only under stress in 4WH & 4WL, or is it involved in 2WD as well? Is the 4WL reduction before or after the chain drive (I want to know if I'm working it harder in 4WL)?
Maybe a little Ford t-case education is in order for me. Any teachers out there?
Thanks & Happy Holidays!

By the way, I don't even know what t-case I have in my rig. Anyone know?

it's a borg-warner 4406F but I don't have much other info, couldn't find much about it from a few GOOGLE searches... let me know if you find anything else. I have not heard of much if any trouble from this transfer case.
The reduction (4WL) is before the chain, but the chain only drives the front drive shaft. So in 2wd it is not moving (unlike your old Quadratrac).
These t-cases are pretty strong, but if beat the hell out of your truck, they'll only last as long as the rest of the truck. A real killer is running the 4wd on dry pavement. This will stretch the chain when taking tight corners. Always use 2wd on dry pavement! I ran mine in 4wd in snow all day today (about 150 miles) and she behaved perfectly.
