05 Focus, fuel system issues

I have posted this on a couple of Focus website, with very very limited results. I figured since the Focus uses the same basic fuel system as the truck I would try here.

My wifes 05 Focus ZX4 SE has had some issues with the fuel system. About 3-4 months ago she said that her car started kinda hard one morning, well it looked into it a little more that night and over the next week or so. I have basically found out that if the car sits for more than 1hr the fuel pump makes a loud growling sound, it sounds like a bearing or something is going out, and it takes 7-10 seconds of cranking before the car will start. But if the car sits for less than 1hr the fuel pump sounds totally normal and the car starts fine. I figured the fuel pump was going out, so I dropped the tank and replaced the pump with a brand new model. It does the same thing!!!

So now I am kinda stumped, I don't want to take it to the dealership, but I can't figure out what the heck is going on. Any input??

Any weird sputtering or similar on the car? Once running, is it running normal? Any oddball changes in MPG?

Hey RP!

The car runs and idles perfect once started, no spitting or sputtering. Mileage is the same, 30 +/- 1 or 2 mpg ever tank. It still seems to have all the get up and go that it has always had when passing a car or accelerating on the interstate, ect.

Any input would be great!!
