Post 98 Nascar Special Edition

i have a question.
i have run across a 98 NSE and i am thinking about buying it because the price is right and it looks great, however I am concerned about the performance...
220hp.. the Dakota RT has more, and so does my buddy's 97 silverado, so has anyone run against some of these trucks and how have you competed??? i really dig this truck, except that I am not a huge fan of the wheels
just let me know

The NASCAR Special Edition may only have the 220hp, 4.6 Triton engine, but it comes with a 3.73 rear end, lowered sport suspension and the Roush exhaust. Add a K&N FIPK, cooler thermostat, and a Chip or re-program the computer and you have a truck that runs real well straight line and exceptional in the curves. I've run mine, stop light to stop light against Chevys and even the Dodge R/T and haven't been beat yet. Most trucks come with a 3.50 (approx) or larger rear end and light to light, the 3.73 digs in and puts the hp to the road. When I get my JBA headers this summer, the only truck on the road I feel will be my equal is the Lightening.. I've even suprised a few sports cars light to light.
You also have to remember the tradition and numbers that make the NSE special. It celebrates 50yrs of the F150, 50 yrs of NASCAR and they only made 3000. If you have one with the tonnaue cover then you have one of 600. That's what mine is. These trucks are the forerunner of the Lightening as it is today. I traded a 95 Corvette with only 13,000 miles in for mine and haven't regretted it for a second. It's actually more fun to play with.

Thumbs up

I think a goodly amount of them are in Fl,I saw a bunch of them in Tampa. I could have been seeing the same ones, but I don't think so,They were all customized ever so slightly, and differently. As a matter of fact,I like the wheels. It gets alot of looks because it looks different from all the billet laden trucks out there. If I were you,I would get it. Chip it,and put a K&N or Airaid intake on it,and it'll put a smile on your face all the time ,,,,98

I agree with 98Screamer. The black 10 spoke aluminum wheels are similar to the wheels on a Nascar machine and set this truck apart from all the brushed aluminum or chrome wheeled trucks out there. You'll get a lot of comments about them, believe me. I've got the only one in this area (I think). At least I haven't seen another one and none of my friends have seen one either. They were spread out across the southeastern US and with only 3000 total made, anywhere you find one, it's gonna be unique. Let us know if you bought it or not. I don't think you'll be disappointed if you did. I traded a 95 LT1 Corvette for mine and I'm not at all disappointed.

Talking

I've heard they are 98 Navigator rims with
black powdercoating. It looks right to me,are they? I've been contemplating getting some of the Nav. rims, and painting them. My tan truck doesn't look right with silver wheels,or billet. ,,,,,98

I think most of them were sent to OK/TX, Ive seen about 20 of them around here plus 4 of my friends have one,,Kind of sucks, Thats the reason i got it because only 3000 were made so i thought i would be the only one around here with one..But a least mine is 1of600 theirs isn't.lol ..most of the other ones that run around here have a stick and mine is an auto..I also find them to be slower than mine (I wouldn't get a stick in a truck..a car is another story) i haven't been outran yet by a 4.6 or 5.4

98Screamer, I couldn't find a 98, but did find a 99 Navigator and I think you are right. Except for the color, they look identical.

Hey does anyone have 1/4 mile times with the NSE. I have the manual trany, with a computer chip, and a K&N filter. I havent had the pleasure of meeting an R/T at the stop light, but I would definetly drop the hammer! One more question, will the Hypertech Computer Programer override the speed limiter. I bought the Jett chip thinking that would do it, but was wrong. Any help will be greatly appreciated

Nascar 4.6; the Hypertech Power Programmer III lets you set the speed limiter for S, T, or H tires. That's 110, 116, or 128 mph.
As for 1/4 mile times, I've never run mine on a track so I can't give you any times. I can't wait to get the daughter thru college cause I'm gonna supercharge this truck the day after she graduates.

To give you an idea,My friend has one with a stick and he has 4.10 gears, steeda pulleys, ram air, superchip.and he only ran a 15.9 kind of slow i think..? I have an auto, superchip,K&N,electric fan, stock 3.73 gears and mine feels faster than his...but ive never took it to the track yet............. first thing i would do is get the superchip it will override your speed limiter.. Also he races a dodge RT all the time and the dodge takes him by about 2 cars..

So it sounds like the Hypertech programer and the Superchip will override the speedlimiter. I will probable just get the Hypertech programer and keep the chip. Thanks for all the help.

Does anyone have a pic of the rims. I've only seen a few of these around NJ. Is 98 the only year they were made. and does anyone know why they just put the 4.6 in it and not the 5.4?

Lightbulb Why

A dealer told me that Ford had planed to put the 5.4 in the Nascar edition truck but then at the last second before production changed their minds & stuck the 4.6 in for some unknown reason, He thought maybe it could have had somthing to do with the upcomming release of the 99' Lightning for what ever reason, he thought it was sorta strange to. But he said ya never know somtimes thats how Big Business operates. On another note I have often speculated to myself about how this 4.6 was said to have minor engine recalibrations and I kinda wonder what kind of HP. that would give it over a stock 4.6 and I have often thought that the difference could be five HP. because in 1998 the mustang had 225 hp. & the F-150 4.6 was 220 hp. my thinking being they may have done what they did to the mustang to the 4.6 in our Nascar edition trucks, I could be way off base on that I dont know but it seems possible to me.
