THinking about buying an Explorer ...
The wifes car is getting kinda ragged and we are looking to get an SUV. Was looking at the Escapes originally and thought we might go that way. My sister has one and she always says she wished it was a little bigger. I like the Explorers and we are leaning that way right now. We are looking at 2007 or 2008 model years. This would be a vehicle that we would probably keep for 4-6 years, and would need to haul a couple kids around (our first is on the way). Any advice out there from the Explorer owners, things to get, things to avoid, etc.
Check out www.explorerforum.com, hope you find what you are looking for. My wife drives an 06 Eddie Bauer V8 4x4, we bought it new she really likes but a little hard on gas. We have done all the normal maintenance on it, only issue so far knock on wood was a stuck caliper on the rear brakes.
weeeeellll i just bought this....its sort of an explorer...

its an explorer sport trac, decent gas mileage 15 round town and 20ish highway. newer ones have a 4.6 V8 in em, the 2001- current are available in the 4.0L v6. its basically an explorer with about a foot or two more frame to accommodate enough leg room in back for me to sit there ( I'm 6'6" and about 280lbs) and a 4.5' bed. they are realy nice trucks im honestly really suprised. totally not what i expected them to be. now if you go for the SUV version of an explorer the oonly one ive owned was a 94 eddie bauer edition. i sold it with 180k on the clock and i still see it around town every so often 4 years later. so yeah the explorer platform isn't bad, but the 94 i had was almost as bad as my F150 on gas.
