"By the time Mahindra's haulers go on sale in the U.S. in the first quarter of 2009, we'll be celebrating the 50th anniversary of the birth of the import compact truck in America. In 1959 another small, Asian-based company started selling a few Japanese-sourced 37-horsepower pickups with the funny name 'Datsun 1000'. Today that company sells tens of thousands of midsize and full size pickups, not to mention every other type of vehicle, under the Nissan brand."

Wonder how they can compare Nissan's success to thier own. What kind of buisiness stratagy that is for the CEO, I am 50 now, let me start forking out some serious coin now hoping that in 50 years I will be as big a Nissan. Sounds like spending a buck to make a nickle.

Price point will be in the 20's, tooooooo many other better trucks can be had for that cash, if they were selling them for under $8,000 they might stand a small chance but thats like asking for Caddy cash on a Yugo.

That's a lie!

"Absolutely no Yugo parts were used in the manufacture of this truck."
The CEO stands by that statement until proven otherwise.

One method of getting the diesel engine to meet emissions req'ts is to use Urea. The Urea needs to be filled at regular intervals. This is a cheap-o method of doing it. There are better methods... like the one Bosch designed.

and my comments on the vehicle... it is clearly a SUV that wants to be a truck - did you notice how short the wheel base is??? It looks like if you put a load of stone in the back you'll be doing wheelies all the way home!

The urea thing just sounds like a hodge podge way of doing it.

It is rated a ton capacity in the bed, which really isn't that bad.

Wow. Not so easy on the eyes. If they can get the problems worked out, the diesel mini trucks sound like a good idea. i drove a Volkswagen eurovan while i was over in Denmark for work , and it was diesel powered. got to drive the thing around for about 3 weeks, and only used about 3/4 tank of fuel. pretty efficient.
I wish i could get my hands on a Diesel Ford Ranger that got about 60 MPG.
anyway, my $.02

I think there's some kind of link between Jeep and Mahindra that goes back to just after WWII. They still manufacture a Jeep knock off based on the original
postwar Jeep, so they probably are licenced to use that 7 slot grill.

This is going to be an interesting addition to the American pickup truck landscape in that it will offer a number of unique features not currently seen over here. For one, it will be a compact pickup with a clean, high-tech 4-cylinder diesel. In addition it will have a 6-speed tiptronic transmission. It will be offered in both crew cab and regular cab versions. Payload reportedly will be a little over one ton, which is extremely high for this class of vehicle.

Wow. One more reason for Ford to get its next incarnation of the Ranger right...or slap a diesel in the Sport Trac sooner than later.

I wouldn't dismiss this thing yet unless it lacks the offroad capability of the home market. These guys are partnered with Renault/Nissan, so there's that parallel with Datsun...

Ironically enough, the brothers Mahindra got their start by adapting an American product to the Indian market. After WWII, they set up their namesake company to franchise ****** Jeep production for India’s surface-challenged roads.
